I was recently listening to a recording of Darren Hardy, the publisher of “Success Magazine”, give a talk about his book “The Compound Effect”. He touched on a lot of amazing big ideas, but one that really resonated with me was the idea of trying to install top tier software on a broken operating system.

I remember when I was in A-School training a long time ago in Navy and we had to learn how to shoot the M4 , I had recently injured myself during hand to hand combat training and I was hiding it, so i wouldn’t be held back in class. Needless to say no matter how much they explained the perfect position to get into in order to fire this weapon I had no choice but to fire the weapon my own way.

The instructor came over to me and asked me what my “malfunction” was and why I couldn’t follow instructions, that wasn’t a good day.

Looking back on this day I know that no matter how good the instruction was or the software, my body could not operate it because it was broken.

You see when you are aspiring to personal mastery it is imperative that you are installing everything you learn on a mind and body that is ready to receive the information. No matter how great the leadership program, or how thorough the marketing training or how in depth the personal coach explains the personal mastery concepts if you are not ready to receive what is being given it will become useless.

Personal Mastery and a Dirty Cup of Water

The Buddha says in “The Dhamapada” that , “Little by little a person become evil, as a water pot is filled by drops of water… Little by little a person becomes good, as a water pot is filled by drops of water.”

Darren Hardy also says that we need to “flush out our minds”. You see everyday we are bombarded by images of gossip, misogyny, terror and just all out negativity. You can even cut of all of that junk out in your own home and stick to the positive and still be bombarded , on the train, at work, at the gym and anywhere else where there is advertising.

We are hit with over 2,500 marketing messages per day, thats over 175,000 per week and we wonder why the late master George Leonard said that america is in an all out war with personal mastery.

So each time we are hit with these things we need to flush them out , you are being forced to feed negativity into your subconscious so lets consciously feed it positivity.

Darren Hardy says its like a dirty cup of water, in order to make a dirty cup of water clean you have to run it under water and let the pure water flush out the dirty water and eventually the dirty cup will become clean.

Do the same thing with your practice of whatever it is you are trying to become great in.

So in conclusion in order to improve and become great, it takes a lot more than reading books on personal mastery, and listening to audios on leadership and whatever else, you need to plant those seeds on a fertile field aka install your software on a working operating system. You can make yourself more ready to accept the teachings you are trying to apply by flushing out your mind. Every time you put get suckered into putting garbage in your mind, make sure you are consciously and consistently replacing it with positive things. Make your entire life part of your practice. Embrace positivity, and install top of the line software onto your personal operating system.
